About the network

Biochar, the solid product of biomass carbonization, has been produced and utilized for thousands of  years. It is one of the most versatile solid fuels with a vast number of applications. In the last years, biochar has gained increasing popularity as a replacement for fossil carbon carriers, in an attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A number of different research areas have evolved around biochar, ranging from archeology and medicine to agriculture and metallurgy. While some are more interested in fundamentals of biomass pyrolysis, others may focus on the effect of biochar in different applications.

The motivation may be different, but knowledge about biochar is gathered in all of these communities. This network shall provide a platform to exchange this knowledge and meet other biochar researchers, producers, users and enthusiasts.

The network started as an idea in 2018 and was formally registered as an association in 2019. (Organization number 922 990 921 in Brønnøysundsregister in Norway).

The membership in the Nordic Biochar Network is personal and currently free of charge. If you want to connect with the biochar community in the Nordics, become a member!
